From a more personal perspective, doing away with the “old” also expresses the desire to resolve an identity crisis or psychological conflict with one’s progenitors or parental figures. For self-affirmation, you have to figure out how to assert your own personality and make a name for yourself through your own actions. By proving that, as a summoner, she was just as gifted as her father, while distinguishing herself as a person thanks to her circle of friends and how she conducted herself, Yuna gradually succeeded in transcending the image of her father. She also owed her success to her determination, courage, and character. The fact that she lost her parents at a young age certainly contributed to her becoming a strong woman capable of asserting her own personality.

The case of Tidus is more complex, and the game focuses on it in greater detail. In many ways, his case links with one of the most famous concepts in psychoanalysis: the Oedipus complex. Theorized by Sigmund Freud in the early 20th century, this concept takes its name from the myth of Oedipus, the king of Thebes, who mistakenly killed his father, Laius, and married his mother, Jocasta, with whom he committed incest. For Freud, a child’s psychological and emotional development between the ages of three and seven years old can be compared to the myth of Oedipus, as a boy will develop a sexual desire for his mother and see his father as a rival he hopes to replace. The theory itself is, of course, much more complex, as it covers a broader range of determining factors, but in any case, that’s the general idea, which has become a source of inspiration expressed in many forms in different stories, whether in literature or in film.
